Tips to Pack When Moving Into a New Home

) Katrina Gadong |

A major life change like moving homes sure is exciting, but that doesn't make it any less stressful considering the energy, patience, and financial resources involved—not to mention the bittersweet feeling associated with switching addresses.

Whether we like it or not, however, relocating is something almost all of us have or will experience at least once as we get a taste of independence perhaps during college or early working years, or once married and slowly building a family of our own.

Only a few can make these big moves seem easy, because truth be told, without the right amount of preparation, it will feel like an overwhelming mess filled with one huge decision after another. But slowly and surely will do the trick, and maybe you want to consider these simple suggestions before you even close the door of your former home behind you:

Take-with or purge-it?
The great thing about moving is that it gives you the opportunity to get rid of items you no longer use or need. Just bring the essentials; think hard if you need all 20 drinking glasses when you are only living by yourself. Determine what to keep, what to sell (in a garage sale or online, if and when you still have the time), what to give away, and what to dump in the trash.

Label boxes carefully
Several individuals who have moved in and out of homes highly advise that packing by room or function would be the best strategy and that goes without saying that each box should be labelled well. Fitted sheets will not be found in the "Kitchen" box the same way pots and pans are not in the "Living Room." You can also make a list of items inside "Master Bedroom Box #1" and "Master Bedroom Box #2" to lessen the confusion.

Have your transition period needs
You'll definitely be on your toes on the days before, of, and after your move—it might even take several drives from your old place to the new one given the amount of your stuff—so don't forget to pack a bag meant for your last few nights at Point A and first few nights at Point B. Toothbrush, towel...consider what you would bring on an extended weekend trip. At least you don't have to unpack all your boxes right away in search of clean underwear.

Good luck with the process and enjoy your new home!
