Best Places to see Autumn Leaves in Tokyo by Ward/City

After relatively warm October and the first week of November, it is “finally” getting cold. It is time for Momiji-gari or autumn leaves hunting! You are new to Tokyo and not familiar with the place names that pop up as autumn foliage viewing spots on the internet or not sure about how far they are from you? Do not worry! Here is a shortcut for you.

Best Dates for Autumn Foliage Viewing 2023

On November 2, 2023, Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) released its third forecast of autumn foliage 2023. This forecast shows the best timing to view red leaves (Japanese maple trees) and yellow leaves (gingko trees) in approximately 700 locations across Japan.

According to the forecast, the best timing to see both yellow and red leaves in Tokyo will be from the end of November to the beginning of December.

Where Can I See Autumn Leaves in my Ward/City?

Here are the major locations to see autumn leaves in Tokyo. Just check the address of where you stay, find the name of the ward/city in the table below. You can also see in the table when is usually the best timing to visit each location.

At almost all locations in the table, you can now or soon enjoy viewing autumn leaves, but note that, according to the information available online, the colors of the leaves seem to be already starting to fade at Lake Okutama and Hatonosu Canyon (the last two in the table).

If you don’t mind traveling a little bit farther to try a few more locations, you can also check out the map below and find out wards or cities near you. If you are planning to go this week, Meiji Jingu Gaien (Shinjuku Ward) or Yasukuni Jinja Shrine (Chiyoda Ward) will be perfect to see golden glowing gingko leaves.
